CGC Board Duo sign off

November 2025

The Colac Golf Club farewelled two outstanding board members Treasurer Bruce Roberts and Secretary Kerrie Curtis at its recent AGM.

The club benefited greatly from the generosity of these two. We wish Kerrie well with the move interstate, while Bruce is still around and will have more time for golf now.

CGC recognised Kerrie’s roles as club Secretary and Ladies’ Captain, as well as her substantial achievements, amongst many, in implementing technology upgrades in golf management and club administration.

The club also recognised Bruce’s outstanding contribution to the Board through his roles as Treasurer and Director of Finance.

CGC Award Life Membership to Darren Cook

October 2025

LIFE MEMBERSHIP: CGC Chair Reg Dawes presents Darren with his life membership certificate.

Colac Golf Club’s Darren Cook was awarded a life membership at this year’s annual general meeting read Paul Hanson’s presentation speech, below.

It is with great pride that we nominate Darren Cook for Life Membership at the Colac Golf Club. Few individuals have left such a profound, lasting impact on the club – on and off the course – as Darren. His contribution is not only measured in victories, records, and titles, but in decades of selfless service, unwavering loyalty, and a deep love for the game and this club.

A legacy in the making – from junior to club icon

Darren’s association with Colac Golf Club stretches across nearly five decades, beginning in 1976, when, at just 10 years old, he would join his father Bill and brother Ross at the course. Even in those early years, Darren’s enthusiasm, talent, and maturity earned him the respect of senior members – securing invitations to play on Saturdays at a time when such privilege for juniors was rare.

From those early rounds, Darren’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. He has gone on to become one of the most respected, decorated, and influential members in the club’s proud history.

Achievements and playing record – a champion among champions

Darren’s playing résumé is nothing short of legendary, both at club and district level. A few highlights:

  • CDGA Junior Champion (1982)
  • Kevin Horne U21 Champion (1986)
  • CDGA District Men’s Champion (1986)
  • A key member of the victorious CDGA U21 team at Buninyong, still remembered as a golden era for the district

At Colac, Darren has etched his name into club folklore with a record 13 club championships – a feat that speaks to his natural ability and his competitive drive. His list of triumphs also includes three Foursomes Championships (1993–1995) and an incredible three hole-in-ones, including a memorable ace on the 16th in 1981 and the distinction of being the first to record a hole-in-one at Moonah Links.

Representing Colac with distinction, Darren has been part of 15 Division 1 Pennant-winning teams, many as captain – where his leadership, honesty, fierce competitor, mature composure under pressure and commitment to team success inspired those around him.

Also represented Corangamite District in Country week regularly and was with honoured with the Captaincy on multiple occasions.

He’s also left his mark across the region, holding course records at Beeac, Birregurra, Cobden, Colac, and Timboon – a rare and impressive feat that underscores his elite playing calibre.

Beyond the scorecard – leadership, mentorship, and service

Darren’s contribution to Colac Golf Club runs far deeper than scorecards and trophies.

He served as President in 2000–2001, has been a long-serving committee member, and currently plays a critical role as Chairman of the Greens on the club board. His eye for detail, practical know-how, and unrelenting work ethic has been instrumental in shaping the course we enjoy today.

He has also been a mentor and coach – first in the 1980s and 90s alongside Maurie Neilson, guiding junior golfers, and more recently in 2017–2018 when he once again took up the coaching reins for our junior pennant team. Darren’s patience, generosity, and ability to connect with young players helped cultivate not just skill, but confidence and sportsmanship.

From mowing fairways to working the bar, from committee rooms to coaching, Darren has given his time, energy, and heart to this club without ever asking for recognition.

Generosity without limits – a true supporter

Few members have supported Colac Golf Club with the consistency and generosity that Darren has.

Through both his business and personal contributions, Darren has sponsored countless events and donated both goods and services – often quietly, without fanfare. His annual sponsor days have become iconic, not only for the high-quality prizes but for the experience and camaraderie they create. He has even treated groups of members to unforgettable days at Huntingdale Golf Club, covering all costs himself – a gesture that speaks volumes of his character and loyalty to fellow members.

His generosity has become the stuff of legend—particularly when it comes to the BBQ. As is often joked around the club, Darren’s donated enough bread rolls to feed an army, ten times over.

Beyond the club, Darren has also extended his support to the wider golf community. His close friendship with 1999 Masters Champion Craig Spence saw him travel as a supporter and even caddy at the Asian Tour School in 1995—an experience that created memories still cherished today.

Conclusion

Darren Cook is, quite simply, the embodiment of what Life Membership stands for. His record as a player, leader, volunteer, mentor, sponsor, and ambassador for Colac Golf Club is unmatched. His presence has helped shape the culture of the club – built on respect, commitment, camaraderie, and an unshakable passion for the game.

He hasn’t just contributed to Colac Golf Club; he has helped define it.

For these reasons – and many more beyond what words can express – we wholeheartedly and respectfully nominate Darren Cook for Life Membership of Colac Golf Club.

Please accept this proposal to induct Darren Cook as our 5th living life member of the Colac Golf Club. Proposed – Paul Hanson, Michael Tyers and seconded – Troy Kincaid, Peter Lemke

Sporting Facilities Insights Survey Help – Shape our Future

Thursday June 13, 2024

Dear Club Members and Supporters

We want to hear from you.  We are writing to you today to seek your support and input as we implement an exciting initiative at the club. We have engaged Club Builder 2035 to run a Sporting Facilities Insights Survey. Survey link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HW72N9K

The survey will better understand our facilities as we plan for the future of the club. The survey and the resultant Insights Report will provide the Board with clear insights into the thoughts, hopes and concerns of our members and stakeholders. It is critical to the planning process that we hear your thoughts and views. Accordingly, Club Builder have prepared an online survey to capture your thoughts around some key questions about the club.

We ask that all members, supporters and anyone that has an interest in the future of the club, takes the time to click through to the survey and provide your input. The survey will take approximately fifteen minutes to complete BUT the insights that you provide will provide benefit to the club both this year and beyond. Please note that the survey responses will go directly to Club Builder and no-one from the Board or club management will be able to see your responses.

Club Builder will provide an anonymous summary of the survey results in a Strategic Insights Report. So, please feel comfortable to be open and honest in your responses. To complete the survey, please click on the following link:

Runners-up on a countback with a score of 59.5 nett were club members Adrian and Will Murphy, Richard Dinatale and Vince Larosa pictured below.

We had 28 clubs represented for the event, and the winning team encompassed the diversity of clubs represented. With a great score of 57.375 nett the winners were Andrew Gibson, Damien McMaster, Luke Saunders, and Sam Eilken (From Torquay, Lake Bolac and SGA).

COLAC GOLF CLUB LIFE MEMBERSHIP AWARD

Life membership for Colac Golf Club’s Ron McCann

Peter Custs speech on presenting a life membership to CGG’s Ron McCann at the recent AGM

“I’ve been asked to give you an insight into the work that Ron has contributed to the Colac Golf Club over the last 43 years. Ron’s first experience here was around 1979 when he played in a local fire brigade day. The golfing bug must have bitten him there and then as he joined up in 1980.

In 1981 Ron, Bill O’Brien and Jim Beckett formed the Colac Golf Club Social Club. This included many fundraising activities including raffles, social golf days and various events. These also included Saturday night raffles when the clubhouse was full to the brim after a day’s golf. Ron assisted with any maintenance and general duties within the clubhouse.

In 1984-85 Ron assisted Maurie Nelson with the coaching of junior golfers on a Sunday morning. Darren Cook, Troy Kincaid, Mick Tyers, Chris Milverton, Paul Hanson, Craig Spence and also Ron’s son Carl were just some of them. From 8am until 12midday there could be as many as 50 young players receiving their help. Ron represented the club for around seven years playing pennant golf and was the captain of a winning division 4 team.

Ron retired from work in 2009 and immediately joined the now famous Dad’s Army crew. Every Monday morning, he would up at the club on the roughs mower, emptying bins, picking up debris after storms and whatever else was required. Ron has indicated he will contribute in any way he can in the future. He does not want pats on the back or too much credit because his love for the club is first and foremost.

After nearly four and half decades Ron has given the club around 5000 hours of his own time which equates to around 620 eight-hour days. To you Ron on behalf of every member past and present, well done, congratulations and thank you.”
